Once an off-the-beaten-path destination, Tulum has become a popular locale for getaways, destination weddings, vacationing celebrities and adventurer seekers. It is easy to see why this small town has grown so rapidly. It now boasts chic trendy restaurants, crafty cocktail bars, mezcalerias and beachfront boutique hotels. With couples flocking to this seaside escape for destination weddings, we wanted to hear from experts Regina and Krista of Crosby + Jon Design, founders of Archive Rentals, about their favorite wedding venues and what they love about Tulum.
What has been your favorite Tulum venue to design in and why?
Regina: One of our favorite locations to design in Tulum is a new property called Sanara. We love many of the properties in Tulum, but Sanara is most closely aligned with our aesthetic. It offers all of the rustic beauty of Tulum, coupled with soft minimalist modern architecture. It has been very easy for us to suggest this property to clients who want both authenticity and luxury. In short, it’s dreamy.
What is it about the landscape of Tulum that gives you inspiration?
Krista Jon: I love the pureness of color in the Tulum landscape. The green foliage, the blue Caribbean waters and the white sand make the perfect backdrop for a relaxed natural vibe.
Regina: The sea is an obvious answer, but Tulum offers more than the stereotypical Caribbean blues. It has undeveloped sand beach areas for miles, expansive open spaces, balmy air, lush tropical foliage and more stars at night than you can count.
Do you commonly feel you lean towards tropical textures and hues when coming up with concepts for a wedding or event in Tulum?
Krista Jon: Not usually. I think if you have a tropical location it's good to layer in different looks to keep a balance of luxury and natural casualness.
Regina: I am continuously looking for new ways to approach design. When studying destination beach weddings, they all looked almost identical. I couldn’t discern one from another, and I couldn't tell anything personal about the couple. It wasn't even clear where the wedding was taking place. Sure, the water and sand are great, but I think there is more of a story to tell. We’re always excited about telling the couple’s personal story.
Describe your favorite event/wedding that you have designed:
Krista Jon: My favorite was this past wedding ceremony we designed at Casa Violeta. It was a small ceremony on the beach, and I loved the way the light blush and white floral garlands looked mixed with lace against the light blue waters and white sand. We also had mixed upholstered furnishings with pews, which made such a luxurious statement.
Regina: We designed a reception at Sanara that was modern and luxe, yet soft and rustic. We used a watercolor palette, clean lines, natural woods, mixed metals and lush florals. It was exactly right for that particular couple and for the venue.
What has been your favorite venue in terms of accommodation/service?
Regina: Tulum is very laid back, so don't expect room service or a concierge at most hotels. But for those who like a little more service, we recommend Ana y Jose Charming Hotel. You will feel well cared for there
