When Ashley and Andrew decided to plan their destination wedding in Punta Mita, they knew that they were picking a beautiful spot. This Mexico beach area boasts amazing private homes, sprawling resorts and picturesque golf courses. It has become known as one of the country's best luxury vacation spots. But when Ashley and her beau decided to escape the tourist scene, they chose to go to Sayulita.
Punta Mita and Sayulita: A Destination Wedding in Paradise
Getting off the beaten path in a resort destination can be a challenge if you don’t know where to look. Sometimes, however, the perfect little getaway is right around the corner! Sayulita is a short 30 minute drive from the bustling resorts of Punta Mita. Its personality is very different from its popular and famous neighbor. Words like "artsy" and "mellow" are often used to describe Sayulita. Mellow? Yes, but there is still a lot to do here.
So if you find yourself looking for unique experiences while in Punta Mita, Mexico, take a day or overnight trip to Sayulita just like Ashley and Andrew did.
Art & Culture
There is no shortage of color in Sayulita. Home to many artists, the town is filled with shops selling local pottery, weaving, folk art and jewelry. You’re sure to fall in love with these handmade treasures while wandering the colorful streets.
Be sure to visit a few of the galleries while you’re in town. The best include Arte de Sayulita, Artefakto, Cori Jacobs Gallery, Galeria Tanana, JaLu Gallery, Jane Maroni Organic Designs, La Hamaca and Z Galeria.
Sayulita has long been a surf destination because of the warm water and consistent waves. With a mix of beach and reef breaks, it has both slow-rolling longboarding waves for beginners and faster, steeper rides for experienced surfers. The summer swells are smaller and friendlier, though many surfers travel to this spot during the winter months when swells can reach 15 feet or more.
Need to rent a board or want to take lessons? There are plenty of local shops and schools to get you set up and help you learn to stand up.
Kayaking, whale watching, fishing and horseback riding are just some of the ways you can experience nature in Sayulita. Eco-tourism flourishes because of the natural beauty of the land.
The ocean is the biggest attraction in Sayulita. There are lots of spots accessible to kayakers, snorkelers and divers. You are almost guaranteed to see tropical fish and a sea turtle or two while paddling or swimming. Don’t like getting wet? Go on a whale watching boat tour or a deep-sea fishing trip and enjoy the ocean while staying completely dry.
If you aren’t thrilled with the thought of spending your days on or in the water, there are options for land-lovers as well. Sayulita boasts some beautiful areas for canopy tours, horseback riding, four-wheel riding, hiking and mountain biking.
Combining Sayulita and Punta Mita gives you the best of both worlds: the small town vibe of Sayulita and all the luxuries that Punta Mita offers. It really is the ideal Mexican location for a destination wedding or intimate elopement.
