Del Mar is home to one of California’s most storied racetracks. Built in the 1930s by a partnership that included Gary Cooper and Bing Crosby, the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club hosts a summer racing season that last from mid-July though Labor Day weekend. Located in such a timeless setting and sitting only feet away from the Pacific Ocean, Del Mar provides an unmatchable atmosphere for enjoying the Sport of Kings. With San Diego’s ever-pleasant summer weather, there is hardly a better way to spend an afternoon.
There are several ways to get the most out of racing season this summer. The Del Mar Diamond Club is a free-to-join loyalty program that offers perks like discounts at the track. Serious handicappers (wagerers who bet more than $20,000 per month) who are Diamond Club Members are eligible for California’s Significant Player Program. In addition to General Admission tickets, there are three restaurants that offer race attendees the chance to reserve a table that overlooks the track (tables seat four people). Rates vary between $60 (for weekdays) and $250 (for opening day). Tables can be reserved for $125 on weekend days.
Del Mar also has two premium clubs. The Saddle Club is a casual club that offers an exclusive seating area, free daily admission, wi-fi access, and full service meals. The annual fees start at $900 per year, and perks include guest passes to the clubhouse and the opportunity to pre-reserve tables for special events. The exclusive Turf Club has an $800 membership fee. It is more formal than the Saddle Club and a shirt and jacket are required for all men and dresses or pants suits for all women. This clubhouse features exclusive seating and gourmet food and drink service. Members of both clubs enjoy priority parking.
With horse racing’s Triple Crown ending in early June, most people will certainly be buzzing about the action on the track when Del Mar’s season kicks off. Some of the best thoroughbreds on earth will be running during the meet. However, the action goes well beyond the track. A non-horse highlight is the Del Mar Summer Concert Series, which coincides with the meet each summer.
With a six-week season, you will have multiple chances to host a special event that coincides with the racing: perhaps a pre-race luncheon for fellow thoroughbred aficionados or a post-day cocktail party for business associates. Whatever type of event you want, one of these San Diego area luxury event estates will suit your needs:
1. The Villa Costa is a top choice for a classy cocktail party. It can host 150 guests for hors d'oeuvres and cocktails or 120 for a seated luncheon or dinner. This luxury Italian-style villa has stunning ocean views and a state-of-the-art outdoor entertainment space with an infinity pool.
2. The two-acre Tuscan Del Mar is right in the racetrack’s back yard. Overlooking the Carmel Valley and near enough to the coast to smell and feel the ocean breezes, this estate has an ideal location. The Mediterranean-style villa is complimented by well-manicured gardens and grounds. There is an onsite cottage for overnight guests.
We have other estates in the Del Mar area that can host a pre- or post-race event. You can find your perfect estate on our web site.
