Few wedding venues are as eye-catching as those that were originally meant for a very specific use. There’s just something about the tip-to-tail transformation of a space--from a barn to a dance floor, a Christmas tree lot to the aisle the bride walks down, a lavender field to a reception space for al fresco dining--that adds character and creativity to an event. Among our favorite spaces to transform into wedding venues: greenhouses. Is there a better way to capture the outdoor-wedding feel without worrying about weather? Also, there’s no better venue to display your florals than one that was built for that exact purpose. So, today, we wanted to break down our five favorite greenhouse wedding venues for you. Bust out your gardening gloves and get ready to go oh-so green as we kick off our list with a Californian dream:
(1) The Elysian L.A.
Few greenhouses are as charming as this hidden gem in Northeast Los Angeles. In an area that’s defined by its urban and industrial ambiance, the Elysian is such a nice (and green) change of pace. While it offers great big-city views, the tucked-away, quiet spot is a romantic contrast to the normal hustle and bustle of L.A. The garden at the Elysian is 4,800 square feet and can accommodate up to 130 guests (and there’s a 2,000-square-foot indoor space that can be used for a reception). The Elysian is also a restaurant, offering market-driven dishes in a style they’ve dubbed “Medi Cal."
(2) Anthropologie's Terrain at Glen Mills
Located in Glen Mills, Pennsylvania, Terrain is Anthropologie's garden shop. Yes, it is as mesmerizing and chock-full of character as you’d expect a garden shop run by the creative geniuses at Anthro to be. The restored antique greenhouse on the property is nothing short of pure, Anthro-inspired charm and is just one of many boho-chic spaces the venue offers. You can say your open-air I-Do’s in an Indian Wedding Temple, a restored barn or with a blooming garden as the backdrop. We love that the venue is all-inclusive, eliminating the fuss (and stress) of vettings vendors when planning your wedding. Terrain offers in-house catering, floral and design services. Their culinary team is particularly great about creating one-of-a-kind menus for couples. The spaces here can accommodate up to 110 guests.
Leave it to the East Coast to build a greenhouse venue that rivals Ivy League college campuses in terms of beauty, history and utter charm. We can not get enough of The Foundry in Long Island City and are especially swooning over its weathered-brick greenhouse covered in creeping, crawling, climbing ivy. What was, as its name suggests, a working 19th-century foundry, is now one of our favorite venues to-date, complete with the charm and character of countless wood-beams, eye-opening skylight windows and that ever-dreamy greenhouse. The space can accommodate up to 200 guests for a cocktail-style reception, up to 125 guests for a formal seated indoor dinner or up to 165 guests for seated outside dining in the courtyard area. The greenhouse, specifically, can hold up to 120 people for a cocktail reception and 80 guests for a seated dinner.
Located in Los Ranchos de Albuquerque, New Mexico (just a few steps from the banks of the historic Rio Grande), this Southwestern beauty is one of America’s most storied inns. Designed in 1932 by architect John Gaw Meem (often referred to as the “Father of the Santa Fe Style”), the estate is full of historic local art and that unmistakable Santa Fe charm. Set amidst lavender fields and rows of age-old cottonwoods, Los Poblanos is a working organic farm and ranch. Tucked away in the gardens is one of our favorite greenhouses, which acts as a stunning backdrop for weddings and events alike. With 25 acres of pure Southwestern beauty to work with, the event opportunities are seemingly endless. You can take your vows alongside the stunning saltwater pool, knee-deep in lavender or at a historic on-site art gallery.
(5) Jewel Box Greenhouse
Situated amongst 17 acres of park in St. Louis, Missouri, the Jewel Box is all that its name implies. It’s often referred to as “the Jewel of Forest Park.” The greenhouse boasts a recent $3.5M renovation. A catering room, bride’s quarters and restrooms are all available on-site and permanent floral displays can be supplemented with seasonal flowers for your affair. The space can accommodate up to 250 guests, and, with its 50-feet-high glass ceiling, always manages to feel open and spacious, even with a high guest count.
