Memorial Day's best sounds at the Sacramento Music Festival

The Sacramento Music Festival is one of Northern California's best Memorial Day traditions.  Held annually for the past 41 years, this event brings a variety of genres to the music venues of Old Sacramento and the hotel ballrooms in the center of the city, near the Convention Center.

Though this fest has a major jazz component, other types of music are also on the sonic menu.  If you purchase a pass for all four days of the festival, you will hear swing, blues, zydeco, rockabilly, bluegrass, Latin music, and plenty of other niche genres.  The musical feast starts at 11a.m. on the Friday before Memorial Day and runs all the way through Monday.

Daily passes are available, but a four day pass to all concerts are on sale for $99 per person.  This is one of the few events where you can see the classic kind of big band jazz that once dominated the popular music scene in the US.

This year's headliners include classic rockers Collective Soul, popular jazz act Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue, songwriter Mat Kearney, and swing music star Lee Rocker from the Stray Cats. Local and regional jazz and bluegrass acts will fill out the bill.
