Mexico’s most famous destinations have become havens for sun-seekers over the years. Acapulco, Cabo, Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta: these are names that everyone, even people who have never set foot in the country, are familiar with. No one would argue that the resort scenes in these tourist towns are filled with fun, but neither would anyone tell you that you will find solitude and privacy in these places.
However, if you know where to look, you will find luxurious hideaways all over Mexico that provide a level of privacy and an exclusive experience that the big resort towns can never hope to match. Here are two places that offer a different kind of Mexican vacation experience… the kind that you will never forget.
Tulum is a place of deep history and stunning natural beauty. It has few mainstream resorts, but it is on many travelers’ itinerary because of the well-preserved Mayan ruins that have been unearthed here. Tulum is at the heart of a region called the Mayan Riviera because of the idyllic stretches of coastline near which the ruins are located. These sites are the most visited archeological ruins in Mexico after Teotihuacan and Chichen Itza and buses from nearby Cancun bring loads of tourists.
Tulum itself, though extremely impressive and certainly worth a visit, is not ideal for people seeking solitude. But few of the people who come here notice the surrounding area. Tulum is not at all like the resort-heavy shores of Cancun. Away from the main tourist areas, it is an exclusive vacation destination with luxury villas and boutique hotels tucked into the lush tropical forests that go almost all the way to the coastline.
Be Tulum is one such hotel. A collection of 20 luxury suites, it is characterized by tropical gardens and an overarching sense of luxury. Despite its tropical forest surroundings, the hotel and its grounds are only steps from the beach. In fact, the three Ocean Suites, Be Tulum’s “master suites,” offer direct access to the sands. All the suites boast either swimming pools or Jacuzzis as well as private terraces or balconies. The onsite Yaan Wellness Spa, which offers both standard and traditional Mayan treatment, and a stylish beachside bar and restaurant make this feel like an all-inclusive resort, but one that is entirely more exclusive and luxurious than anything available in nearby Cancun.
On the other side of the country sits the Costa Alegre region. The same idyllic tropical landscapes seen in the Rivera Maya are also found here, on the exact opposite side of Mexico. Costa Alegre is home to Cuixmala, which is arguably the most exclusive and luxurious vacation estate in all of Mexico. Built by a British billionaire and still overseen by his estate, Cuixmala is a collection of airy villas and bungalows that feature opulent furnishings and amazing views. Presidents and celebrities have vacationed here over the years.
The palatial main house has a Moorish style and uncountable number of amenities. It is often rented out by wedding parties. Another villa features an outdoor tiled “living room” that sits directly on the beach. Private pools, horseback trails, and gourmet food are all on the menu here, whether you choose a small “casita” in a quiet corner of the property or one of the three expansive villas.
We have dozens of properties all over Mexico. Go here to find your own definition of exclusive paradise.
