Hunger Games Fever: Find Your Perfect Filming Venue in North Carolina by Estate Weddings and Events

By this time of year, you'd expect most people to be focusing on Thanksgiving plans and figuring out who's bringing what dessert.

But for many, November 22 is the next big date in their minds, because the 2nd Hunger Games movie, Catching Fire, is released in theaters in the United States on that day.

People simply can't wait to see Jennifer Lawrence again take up the bow of heroine Katniss Everdeen. And we don't blame them (she's even inspired some unforgettable wedding themes). But we also can't wait to see more of the beautiful locations, scenery, and settings.

Filmed in North Carolina, the Hunger Games movies are helping bring the state to the top of Hollywood's preferred filming locations. Other popular TV and film titles filmed there, like Iron Man 3, Homeland, and Revolution, have also boosted interest. The state offers a wide range of scenery and buildings for film productions to choose from.

Since we're all about the gorgeous venues here at EWE, this post is going to celebrate the release of Catching Fire this week by taking a look at some of North Carolina's best estate filming locations!

Consider one of these beautiful venues for your next film or event production...

The Biltmore Estate

If you think that people from Panem's Capitol are extravagant, you should see one of America's oldest Gilded Age treasures.

Built between 1889-1895 by George Washington II Vanderbilt, the Biltmore Estate is located in Asheville, North Carolina. The main house, the Biltmore House, is currently still owned by a Vanderbilt descendant and is America's largest privately owned house with 250 rooms and 178,926 square feet.

The lush grounds and gardens cover 10.86 square miles of land and hold some of the best scenery and vineyards in the entire state. The grounds contain over 250 varieties of roses and 2.5 miles of walking paths. The entire estate is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and is a U.S. National Historic Landmark.

Famous titles filmed here include The Last of the Mohicans (1991), Forrest Gump (1993), and Hannibal (2000). If you're interested in using the Biltmore for your next production, contact their PR office.

Castle Ladyhawke Estate

Katniss Everdeen has never been to Scotland, but you certainly can recreate this country's ambiance for your film at the unique Castle Ladyhawke Estate.

Located in the Tuckasegee River Valley, Castle Ladyhawke is an authentically-recreated Scottish border castle which was a private equestrian estate until 2007. With over 10,000 square feet of space, several Medieval-style rooms (including three suites over 1000 square feet each), and a 60-foot stair tower, the castle can give you that little bit of European influence you'd like in your film.

And the grounds are nothing to balk at, either. The gated estate sits on 62 acres of gardens full of perfect shooting locations, with spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. Lower decks and balconies can also be utilized, and the new Fable Village offers guest rooms for even more filming options.

Estate Weddings and Events can help you get filming permits for this Scottish beauty, so don't hesitate to contact us if you're interested!

The Moses Cone/Flat Top Manor

For a more traditional American setting in the heart of pre-District 12, don't miss this grand piece of architecture.

The Moses Cone Memorial Park rests in the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway and sits on 3600 acres of mountain grounds. Its main house and venue, Flat Top Manor, was completed in 1901 in the Colonial Revival style by Moses Cone, an American textile entrepreneur, conservationist, and philanthropist.

Boasting 13,000 square feet and 20 rooms, the Manor is now the home of  the Parkway Craft Center where visitors can learn anything from woodworking to pottery. The grounds contain 25 miles of carriage trails, several picturesque lakes, and a 10,000-tree apple orchard planted by Cone in his conservation efforts.

Scenes from the film The Green Mile used the Memorial Park and Flat Top Manor. For more information on this venue, contact the Parkway Craft Center.
