Thanksgiving Ventures in Seattle

It's time to head to Seattle and be with the family this Thanksgiving. I love living in southern California, but there is something to be said about heading "home" and the colder weather that helps get you into the holiday spirit.  Having lived in the Seattle area for 26 years, I guess you could say that I know this city like the back of my hand.  So many incredible spots, pockets and hidden gems all throughout the Seattle and Puget Sound area.  On this trip back with the family, here are a few things that I'll be sure to enjoy and partake in....

Space Needle

This most definitely is one of THE BEST views of downtown Seattle and beyond {note: if you want another amazing view of the city, go to Kerry Park - locals spot}.  The Space Needle is located right by the Pacific Science Center {ice skating season}, which if you have time to look inside, it is well worth it.

The views from the top of the Space Needle capture the essence of the city as well as the the natural beauty of the Cascade and Olympic mountain ranges mixed in with calm quiet peace of the Puget Sound.  A must-see and experience.

Pike Place Market

Pike Place Market {founded in 1907} is Seattle’s first farmers market - bringing farmers and customers together - meeting directly, the Market continues the “Meet the Producer” tradition. You probably have seen this Market on a few different TV shows and movies, mostly known for the fish market. I can vouch that this is truly fun to watch and experience, but there is SO MUCH more to the great Seattle Pike Place Market.

It is also the home to the first Starbucks, some of the best "hole-in-the-wall" international foods, organic food options, some of the best floral bundles you will lay your eyes on for ridiculously cheap prices and the list goes on.  You could literally take the day to explore the Pike Place Market area.

Not too mention you can go see the infamous GUM WALL!  As a Seattlite, we find art in everything.  I just highly recommend not participating in the typical dare that is to follow when you arrive, "I dare you to take a piece of gum off the wall and chew it." - NO THANKS!  The gum wall is actually the entrance to Improv Seattle. Its been awhile since I've been, but a few years back...I guess you could say I was a monthly regular.  Pretty funny stuff.

Ferry Ride

Growing up riding the ferry often, I took it for granite, not really understanding that this was not an option in most places. You can either take your car or walk on. Ferry rides can be amazing to go and venture other towns: Bremerton, Bainbridge Island, Vashon Island, Victoria BC and more.  Again, the views you have in Seattle are breathtaking and awe-striking especially when Mount Rainier is out!  Also, keep a careful watch out to see killer whales, porpoises and seals.

Before you catch the ferry or maybe after, be sure to take the experience to the next level and jump on the Seattle Great Wheel that just went in a few years back.  Because I love history, I am thankful that they have brought back a ferris wheel on the water. Back in 1907-1913 there was an amusement park on Alki Beach called Luna Park in which there several heated saltwater pools, a huge German carousel, a Ferris wheel, a roller coaster, a restaurant, and a boat chute into a "tub" of water.   Full circle.

Alki Park

Alki holds a very special place in my heart!  My grandparents and great grandma lived there most of my childhood which meant that I was there a lot.  Their adventurous nature had me hoofing it all over the community.  I would also go as far to say that Alki Beach is our little California getaway which encompasses beach volleyball championships, paddleboarding, kayaking, surf shops as well as some fabulous coffee shops and amazing restaurants with the perfect view.

And of course, we need to have our mini Statue of Liberty to keep watch over the west side of the states.

Macy's Holiday Parade

What Thanksgiving weekend wouldn't be complete without welcoming in the Christmas season with the Macy’s Holiday Parade.  Seattle is very community focused, so this is definitely one of the excuses for the surrounding cities to come in and celebrate together. You better believe we will be bundled with coffee in hand, probably a carousel ride, shopping and then a much needed nap time.

Snoqualmie Pass

Lastly for this Thanksgiving venture home to Seattle is skiing and snowboarding.  Now admittedly, my favorite place to partake in snow season fun is Crystal Mountain, but that is farther south than Snoqualmie Pass which is an easy in and out for all those in Seattle proper.  Snoqualmie offers a wide range of slopes and expertise as well as night sessions.

This winter wonderland is far too close to Seattle to not make the jaunt out to hit the slopes, go sledding, have a snowball fight or just leave your impression by making a snow angel.

Round 2 for Seattle ventures to come next month for Christmas fun.  Wishing you all a very Happy Thanksgiving.
