Tongabezi zambia

Located just 30 minutes from Livingstone and Victoria Falls, Tongabezi is a slice of paradise on the Zambezi River. We arrived in the early evening, after a delayed flight and were greeted with a welcome beverage, wet towel and directed to our cottage.

As we arrived to our room we had a bottle of champagne waiting for us, as well as our bed was decorated in leaves and flowers which they continued to do every day at turndown and when cleaning the room. A very nice touch!

We stayed in cottage number 5 which had a very beachy Cape vibe to it.

Tongabezi offers a variety of accommodations from the riverfront cottages, honeymoon suite, a treehouse, the doghouse {which is a larger villa for families}, the nut house and of course their sister property, Sindabezi Island, which is located a quick 15 minute boat ride down the river.

All accommodations are very unique so there really is something for everyone.

Cocktail hour begins nightly at 7:30pm in which all the guests and dinner is served shortly after, so we had just enough time to enjoy our champagne and watch the sunset from our deck before dinner.

Since there are hippos and crocodiles, an escort to dinner is necessary so we were picked up by our host at 7:30pm and led to the gathering area. From 7:30pm-8:00pm we enjoyed the selection of tray passed appetizers and South African wine.

We were then met by Godfrey, our guide, to discus our itinerary while staying at Tongabezi. We loved how organized Tongabezi is with being intentional of creating a timeline for guests so they don't have to think about it while on holiday.

Tongabezi offers a very generous list of included activities like kayaking, fishing, tour of the falls, visiting a local village, visiting the Tongabezi school, sunset cruises and much more. On top of that they offer additional activities they will arrange, but cost extra, like a visit to Victoria Falls, helicopter tours, white water rafting, etc.

We decided to spend a day touring the falls and visit Livingstone Island which includes lunch. For the second day, we decided to visit the school, local village, and canoe down the Zembezi River.

Now that our activities were locked in, we were ready to sit back and enjoy. During cocktail hour, a group of gentleman sang local Zambian music for us which we really enjoyed. Shortly after, we were led to our table for dinner. The food at Tongabezi was wonderful! Even though we do not eat meat, the chef would prepare a special fish dish for us each night. Meals are typically three courses with a couple options to choose from for your starter and entree.

We decided to make it an early night and headed to bed after dinner. We woke up early and enjoyed coffee on our deck before heading to breakfast. Breakfast Includes a display of fresh fruits, yogurts, muesli and cereals. There is also a menu to order off of. Our daily choice included fresh green juice, egg white omelet with spinach, avocado and Zambian beans.

At 9:00am, Tobias our guide, met us and we got on the road for our tour of Victoria Falls. It was nice that it was just us and our guide. Each group at Tongabezi has their own guide so you really get personalized service. We also noticed that many of the staff at Tongabezi have worked there for 10+ years and many told us that the owners really take care of their employees, which was so great to hear.

We spent about an hour touring the falls and then headed to the Livingstone Hotel where the boat would meet us to take us to Livingstone Island. Livingstone Island is a tiny island at the edge o f the falls where you can actually sit in the pools on the edge of the falls.

Livingstone Island 2This time of year, the falls are roaring and the rain was coming down, yet only in Africa would they still be open for business. I managed to suck up my nerves and made it in the pool where I thought I was going to die. With the fish nibbling at our feet and the rapids nearly taking my swimsuit off, it was very scary yet an amazing experience.

Following our near walk with death, we enjoyed a delicious lunch on the falls edge, all bundled up under a tent. With full bellies and a couple glasses of wine deep, we took the boat back to Livingstone Hotel where a Tobias was there to meet us. We headed back to Tongabezi and enjoyed the rest of the afternoon relaxing by the river.

That night for dinner, Tongabezi brought in a local village to perform traditional Zambian dance for us. It was so amazing to see how proud these people are to be Zambian. We were led to our dining table which this time was set up in the "boat house". It was just the two of us in our own private dining room for two.

The next morning, we headed over to the Tongabezi school which the owners of Tongabezi started 19 years ago with just one class room. Now they offer grades K-8 and provide a place for local kids and the kids of the employees at Tongabezi to get a good education.

We then headed to a local village and were greeted with open arms from the local kids, eager to hold our hands and show us around their village was so heartwarming.

We headed back for lunch and spent the afternoon canoeing on the Zembezi River. A little scared with the hippos, but we managed to survive!

For our final dinner, Tongabezi created an amazing honeymoon experience with dinner on the Sand Pad. A small dock, just a short boat ride from the main dock, where we enjoyed dinner delivered to us by boat, completely surrounded by lanterns and candles. Such an amazing ending to a wonderful few days.

Final Thoughts

Tongabezi was one of our favorite places we visited throughout South Africa and Zambia and its not to be missed. Tongabezi is ideal for honeymooners, families, group travel, anniversaries, intimate weddings, and corporate incentive travel.
